 Preservice Teachers in Action

The ECSU "Dolphin PRIDE" Support Partners

Dolphin PRIDE (Providing Resources to Invigorate Differentiated Education) is a project designed to integrate technology into classroom instruction, for the purpose of more effectively meeting the needs of diverse learners in a heterogeneous setting.  Through a Beaumont Foundation Grant, JC Sawyer Elementary School has received technology resources that will be used to enhance instruction and to address inequities in the "digital divide."  The ECSU Dolphin PRIDE Support Team is comprised of a group of preservice teachers and faculty from Elizabeth City State University who are committed to supporting high quality education outcomes for all students.  The team of eighteen will provide technology support and mentoring for JC Sawyer students during this semester.

Women in Mathematics Conference

Four hundred and eight middle grades girls from the surrounding area schools participated in the Women in Mathematics Conference held at Elizabeth City State University recently.  Under the direction of Dr. Barbara Johnson and Dr. Linda Hayden, ECSU Teacher Education students, Kenya Whittington, Dixie Bundy, and Anthony Moore presented material that enhanced the knowledge of science and mathematics, while making it fun and enjoyable.  The ECSU presenters had previously attended a three-day Mathematics, Science and Technology Conference sponsored by NASA in Alexandria, VA, as well as a two-week Summer Institute at NASA Langley Research Center.

Central Elementary School Teachers Participate in the Intel Teach to the Future Workshop at ECSU

Sixteen Central Elementary School Teachers participated in a 4-day Intel Teach to the Future Workshop this summer at ECSU as part of a NC 1-2-1 Technology Grant they received in the Spring.  The Intel Teach to the Future program is a worldwide initiative to help teachers effectively integrate the use of computer technology into classroom curriculum to improve student learning through inquiry-based learning.  The workshop was facilitated by Carlis Gordon, Central Elementary Media Coordinator and Claudia Twiford, ECSU School of Education and Psychology Director of Instructional Technology, with guest presenter, Deborah Goodman, NCDPI Teacher on Loan.

A Summit on "The Shortage of African-American Males in Teacher Education" - October 15 - 17, 2003

The goal of the recent summit, organized by ECSU and the North Carolina Black Caucus, was to help the University of North Carolina system draw more minority males, particularly African-American males, into teacher education programs.  During the summit, Educators from across the state formulated recommendations for an action plan that would include strategies to:

  • Identify minority males interested in becoming teachers
  • Enroll them in colleges or universities
  • Prepare them for the classroom
  • And ultimately, place them in the classrooms as highly-qualified teachers.

REVITALISE (Rural Educators using Visualization to Inspire Teacher Advancement and Learning to Improve Science and Mathematics Education)

On November 5, 2003, participating members from the National Science Foundation REVITALISE grant met at River Road Middle School to meet, discuss, and participate in innovative uses of technology and software programs that enable teachers to enhance their teaching skills and impact student learning. The members from East Carolina University were: Bob Gotwals, Robin Ryder, Marilyn Scheer, and Sandra Huskamp. Claudia Twiford from Elizabeth City State University, working in conjunction with ECU on the implementation of the grant, attended.  Rita Collie, Director of secondary education for ECPPS, was present and represented the system's support for the grant program.
