The Elizabeth City State
University Laboratory School serves children from ages three (3) through five
(5) years. The Laboratory School is in the School of Education and Psychology.
It was established to provide education majors an opportunity to become familiar
with young children and their characteristics, and to enable the transition of
theoretical concepts into practical application. In addition to teacher training
for education majors, the Laboratory School fosters the goal of providing a
learning environment that will help young children develop to their maximum
potential ph The Laboratory School serves
not only the University, but Elizabeth City and the surround communities as
well, through its acceptance of children of either sex and children from any
ethnic or religious origin. The program is designed to:
Curriculum Objectives North Carolina's Department of Public Instruction supports a developmentally appropriate environment for preschool age children. Early learning standards for a developmentally appropriate environment covers the five areas of approaches to learning, health and physical development, emotional and social development, health and physical development, language development and communication, and cognitive development. The developmentally appropriate concept says that children at the ages of 3-5 years old learn best in an active environment that is planned to match their level of development. Therefore, you will see few desks. Young children are active learners. You will observe children making independent choices in learning centers that are set up with levels of challenging activities. You will observe children sitting in a group listening to and actively participating in a teacher directed activity. Children will be engaged actively in centers, in group activities, and in exploring the outdoor environment.
Hours of Operation The Laboratory School opens at 8 am and closes at 5 p. m. Monday through Friday.
