Information for Participants:

The Dismal Swamp State Park
2356 US Highway 17 North
South Mills, NC

Directions:

The Dismal Swamp State Park is located in Camden County and may be reached using U.S. Highway 17 North. The park is located approximately 15 miles north of Elizabeth City.  Once you go over the high-rise bridge, it should be approximately 3 miles on your left. (Look for the Rest Area signs.)  The Dismal Swamp Educational Center (Gray Colored Building located on the other side of the canal) is located near the back of the rest area.  Parking is available across from this area.
 

Instructions for Participants:

  • Rain or shine, the quest goes on!  Watch the weather and come prepared.  Wear long pants/blue jeans, long sleeves,hat/visor, tennis shoes (no open toe shoes), sunglasses and rain jackets/ponchos if necessary.
  • Bring bug spray with DEET
  • Bring a bag lunch - Snacks and drinks/water will be provided
  • Contact the other participants in your school district so that you can car pool. (The county has agreed to provide transportation.)
  • Please be on time, as we will start promptly at 9 am.  We have a full day planned for you.

Requirements of each participants:

  • Attend the two Saturday workshops 9:00 am – 4:30 pm at the new Dismal Swamp Nature Park Education Center, South Mills, NC
  • House the Handheld Global Positioning Systems (GPS) Science Kits and materials
  • Implement the use of the Handheld Global Positioning System (GPS) with their class
  • Train their 3rd, 4th, and 5th grade teachers on how to use the Handheld Global Positioning Systems (GPS)
  • Complete Data Surveys/Evaluations
  • Attend the pre-delivery Interactive Video Conference follow-up session after school in September and the post-delivery Interactive Video Conference follow-up session after-school in October to share best practices with the Handheld Global Positioning System (GPS) in their schools
