"This project received support from the Golden Leaf Foundation."

The Elizabeth City State University Elearning Hands-On Science program, funded by UNC-General Administration, was piloted in the spring of 2006 with Gates, Halifax and Perquimans County Schools.  In November of 2006, Elizabeth City State University School of Education and Psychology was awarded a Golden Leaf Foundation Grant for $350,000 to support the growth of a scientific literate workforce program in Northeastern North Carolina – Elearning Hands-On Science Program.  The Golden Leaf Foundation Grant targeted the following counties: Bertie, Camden, Chowan, Gates, Hertford, Halifax, Northampton, Pasquotank, Perquimans, Tyrrell, Washington, and Weldon City.   Funds were allocated for science kits for grades 3-5 in twelve schools systems, Interactive Video Conference Lead Teachers here at ECSU and six part-time retired Science Coaches to work in the schools and facilitate the IVC hands-on science sessions.  During the science sessions, teachers collaborate with other school districts via Interactive Video Conferencing and share best practices in science.

In support of Golden Leaf's commitment and in order to promote "Highly Qualified Teachers," Elizabeth City State University offered the opportunity for teachers in these counties to take two elective graduate courses, EDUC 593 - Hands-On Science in the Elementary Classroom and EDUC 695 - Topics in Education - Hands-On Science in the Elementary Classroom part 2 tuition free.  The courses can be used for graduate credit or for continuing education credit.  A $30 application fee, a graduate application, and two official college/university transcripts from each university/college attended must be submitted prior to attending class.

Elizabeth City State University and Northeastern North Carolina schools are grateful for organizations such as The Golden Leaf Foundation, who share the vision for the betterment of our communities.  If we plan to improve the scientific workforce and economic stability of Northeastern North Carolina, we must begin first with our children, who are our future!

Summer 2008 ~ Northeastern North Carolina Area Teachers are Taking a GPS Nature Quest!

Through funding from the Golden Leaf Foundation, Elizabeth City State University School of Education and Psychology has partnered with the NC Department of Environment and Natural Resources – The Dismal Swamp State Nature Park and the NC Department of Public Instruction in providing a professional development science and math workshop entitled “Becoming A Modern Day Indiana Jones - A GPS Nature Quest” this summer for selected teachers in grades 3-5.  The focus is on instructing teachers on the use and integration of the Global Positioning Handheld Systems with the science curriculum plants and animals.  The Golden Leaf Foundation has provided a GPS Science Kit worth approximately $900 for each school that participated.  Each school was allowed to select one teacher who will return to their school in the fall and train their 3rd, 4th and 5th grade teachers on the use of the GPS integrating the science and math curriculum.
