 What is University-School Teacher Education Partnership (U-STEP)?

U-STEP is designed to unite the university education system to the public school system. In this collaboration, the University and the public school system work together to train university students to become skilled teachers.  The partnership focuses on the mutual goal of enhancing teaching, learning and research in schools. Through these collaborative efforts partners prepare teachers to become informed professional decision makers in P-12 schools.   

The present partnership is between the School of Education and Psychology at Elizabeth City State University and the area school systems.   

 

 

Who participates in U-STEP?

Elementary Majors/Licensure Students
Middle Grades Majors/Licensure Students 

Who is exempt from participating in U-STEP?

• Students who are currently working in the school system as a lateral entry teacher (teaching while continuing to work on certification requirements)
• Students working as a teacher assistant in his/her field of study (i.e., 1^st grade teacher assistant seeking K-6 degree or certification)
• Students working as a long-term substitute (consecutive days for an extended period of time replacing a specific teacher)

How do students register to participate in U-STEP?

Names for U-STEP are pulled from student teaching applications.  Applications are completed with the advisor and forwarded to the Office of School Services (Griffin Hall room #158).  Students must complete student teaching applications prior to the deadline.  Applications must be completed prior to the final semester of coursework.

 When will students participate in U-STEP?

The semester prior to student teaching, students will observe under his/her cooperating teacher, when possible.  The following semester the student will student teach with the same teacher, thus giving students a year-long experience.  Cooperating teachers are chosen by the principals and/or central office administrators at the respective schools.   

Who will notify students regarding U-STEP placement?

Students will be notified by the Office of School Services via email and/or telephone once placement information is received.  Clear and accurate contact information on the student teaching application is important.

The year-long student candidates’ internship is based upon the following principles:

• Candidates will benefit from a longer period of classroom clinical experiences.

• During the second semester of the candidate’s senior year, the candidate will include 14 weeks of teaching with the clinical teacher as mentor.

• Candidates will develop Livetext portfolios, keep a reflective daily journal and/or videotape conferences to use as tools for analysis and professional development.

• Performance of the candidates will be assessed by using observation, reflection, and feedback practices.
